Ok I threw this out there, because of the Beatles, Stones thread. Reason being is that I feel these two bands had just as much influence in our youg life times as those bands did in their day. Don't mistake me, I believe that both bands were instrumental in the progression of the music that we hear today, no matter what your flavor is. These bands that I have mentioned had the same effect. They allowed people an alternative to the gangsta rap scene that was hapening at the same time. Some people didn't want to go along with that scene, and a lot of people didn't understand it. So as I look back, and analyze. Nirvana, or Curt Cobain told kids it was ok to be who you were, and rock out. Their sounds were;nt original, but the lyrics were. Kurt Cobain himself drew many fans with his distant stare, his in your face interpretations, and his creativeness. The sound was that of previous punk/ Indie bands, but his words were as deep as John Lennons. That is what made the band Iconic.
Pearl Jam on the other hand, followed the path of Rockers with a sound of "Sonic Youth, meets Neil Young. Their lyrics were strong and focused, yet creative. The sound was different for our time, but very similar to that of the early seventies rock and roller. Pearl Jams songs were deffinately more catchy, but not quite as deep as Nirvanas. I do belive that if you were to compare anthems off of each bands first album, you would find that consumers loved "TEEN SPIRIT" and a few others. But most would prefer Pearl Jams first album, because it had 6 hard hitting songs. My 2 favorites are "alive, and Black". Kurt Cobain of Nirvana of course died, and that is sad, because he left a musical legacy to be passed down to no one, and Pearl Jam continues to create albums that still grab our attention. Whether it is issues in Tibet, child pornagraphy, abandonmetn, government, or life. The lyrics and the songs hit you deep, not too metnion Stone Gossard, and Jeff Ament are brilliant guitar payers. i look back now that Kurt is gone, and see that Dave grohl has done his own thing with the " Fooo Fighters, and Queens of the stonage, but no one else has really done anything. i think at this point Pearl Jam has by far a bigger Radio audiance, a more unique sound, as good of a writing ability, and have more charisma. Even with Kurt Cobain, Nirvana would have never sucombed to that level, which in turn is why i personaly believe he killed himself. My Vote is Pearl jam, quite possibly the most influencial band for those who like this kind of music, that are between the ages of 26 and 50. I said my peice!
